About Us

San Juan Basin Health Department is an organized district health department that has served the residents of La Plata and Archuleta counties since 1948. It is governed by a local Board of Health whose members are appointed by the commissioners of the two counties.

San Juan Basin Health's mission is to enhance the personal and environmental health of the community through education, collaboration, advocacy and direct provision of services. Services include personal health (women’s and child health, communicable disease, immunizations, home health, HIV testing, emergency preparedness, child dental health), environmental health (water, septic, food and air quality) and prevention programs (tobacco, substance abuse, HIV, injury).

The agency has a long history of successfully administering federal, state, local and private grants; its annual budget approaches $5 million. For almost 60 years, San Juan Basin Health has had the opportunity to improve the health and environment of the Southwest Colorado community.
